As we get closer to summer, we get closer to bringing our USL women and men’s teams into season, starting at the beginning of May.
It is hard to explain how excited we are to put these high-level, pre-professional teams on display here in Boulder County through our club. The idea of developing a fanbase, community atmosphere and a true soccer culture around these teams aligns with our ‘soccer for life’ mission.
As communicated previously, some of the players we are bringing in to be part of these teams are coming from out-of-state and internationally. These players require host-families to be a part of these programs and we are hoping families within our club, with the capacity to do so will take this opportunity to host a player and become a part of their soccer family!
This will offer our youth players a cultural and inspirational experience through hosting these pre-professional/college players who are playing at the next-level. Through hosting, you will have a role model for you youth player(s) for the summer who will enhance their drive and passion for the game.
Hosting needs will be from May 1st and July 31st, 2023 (but may have some flexibility on either end).
Players will be assigned to host families as soon as we are able to confirm the family and the player.
If you are interested and have the means to host a player this summer, please fill out our host family questionnaire.
Below are some of the aspects that may make you a suitable host family:
-
A spare bedroom in your shared house or an independent living space.
-
A location within/close to Boulder County for ease of commute to training/games.
-
A youth player who will benefit from having a role model around for the summer (not essential).
-
A vested interest in developing the soccer culture here in Boulder County.
*Please note that opportunities to host a player will be limited based on the number of players recruited from out of state.*
If you are seeking more information on being a host family please reach out to our USL GM Sean Baumann at sean.baumann@albionsccolorado.
We look forward to optimizing these fantastic playing avenues this summer and to our membership being involved in growing our soccer culture. Please consider and ask questions!
We hosted one of the USL2 players last summer and it couldn’t have been a more positive experience! Although he was completely independent with his own car and bought his own food, he quickly became part of our family and regularly joined us for meals and family hang time. He was very easy to get along with and was a great role model for our two sons, often giving them advice on school, sports and life in general. We joked that we couldn’t decide if he was more like an uncle or big brother (bruncle) and he often played soccer, video games and board games with our boys and even helped them with their math for their summer program. He had training in the mornings and had a game or two per week. We loved attending the games, getting to watch the high level of play and then coming home and hearing his analysis. For the away games he’d be gone for two days, but we would watch the live stream. Before he left last summer he attended a Rapids game with us and our boys really enjoyed hearing his thoughts during the game. When he left for the summer our family was sad to see him go, but we have kept in touch. Our boys text him for advice on soccer and also share highlight clips with him from their games. We feel very fortunate to have formed a lifelong bond with him and we’re thrilled that he is returning to play and stay with us this summer!
Hosting players from the WPSL for the past 2 summers has been a wonderful experience. We’ve been lucky to have players from overseas and out of state. They have all been terrific house guests, respectful and fun to have around. I would encourage other families to take advantage of this opportunity!
As a host family for BC United USL summer 2023, we would and will do it again. Luke Smith, a Bolton Man, immediately engaged with our family. He helped cook, a little, and clean and just fit in right away. He answered all of our questions about England and we did our best to explain the USA. The boys overall helped each other get to and from training and any job opportunities they were able to fit into their busy training and playing schedule. Luke even found his way back to Boulder this holiday and we just picked up where we left off when he left to head back to school. It was a positive experience for our family and believe we have found that 3rd kid we always thought about.
Hosting USL players for the upcoming season is not just about providing a place to stay, it’s about establishing a unique relationship and creating a vibrant soccer community within our homes. Being a host family means being part of the player’s journey, sharing in their highs and lows, and being their local support system. Last year our family hosted Ede Gramberg from Germany. We had such a great experience with Ede we’re currently hosting a basketball player from Sweden and hope to host another USL soccer player this spring. The schedule of a host family is intertwined with the players’ training and match schedules, but this does not mean you are tied down. It is rather an opportunity to experience the disciplined life of a professional athlete and perhaps, learn from it. Accommodations are expected to be comfortable and welcoming, fostering a home away from home environment for the players. Activities are not just confined to soccer. It’s about sharing cultures, traditions, and experiences. Whether it’s a family dinner, a trip to a local attraction, or just a relaxed day at home, every activity strengthens the bond between the host family and the player. The connection to soccer becomes more profound as you share the player’s passion for the game. You are not just watching a game on TV, you are living it. You will learn about perseverance, discipline, teamwork, and the list goes on. Lastly, communication is key. Clear and open communication helps in setting expectations and resolving any issues that might arise. Remember, you are not just hosting a player, you are becoming part of their soccer family.
My host family experience couldn’t have been any better. I was extremely blessed to live with Steph and Billy for the summer. Going into it, I didn’t know what to expect, however I quickly settled in and enjoyed spending time with them and their family. The relationship I built with them is one that will last a lifetime. I truly see them as family now. I also became incredibly close with their daughter (Emma), son (Lucas) and Emma’s boyfriend Kyle. There were many great moments this summer, but having the chance to live with the Hempens was the best thing that came from it. The relationship continued to where I went back and visited them before Christmas. The fact that Boulder offers the opportunity to live with a host family is truly great not just for the player, but for the family as well. I didn’t just get to know my host family, I got to know other players’ host families as well which built a real togetherness culture around the team. Words don’t do justice to just how great my experience was with my host family this summer. I can’t thank the club enough and the Hempens for welcoming me with open arms.
First of all, Boulder County United has provided an amazing experience both on and off the pitch. The club was able to connect me with the Meyer family for the summer for a fantastic opportunity off the field. I was able to stay with the Meyer’s family of three with their only son playing within the club as well. Having the opportunity to learn more about their son’s progress throughout the game is great given the growth that has been shown. Being able to establish a daily routine around the family’s routine was eventually established within a week. I’m grateful that the Meyer’s were able to not only provide me with a room and bathroom for myself, but also a vehicle to use throughout the summer. Having the opportunity to sit down and have dinner occasionally with the Meyer’s made me feel at home. The best part was definitely having the opportunity to play in front of the family during home games. It honestly felt like my own family was there in the stands and being able to talk with them after matches made it even more personally. Having the chance to train, or play with their son outside during free time felt like playing with a younger brother. Even after the season was over, communication was maintained throughout the entire fall. Being able to text with my host family throughout my college season was very meaningful as they made the effort to watch as many games possible on ESPN. It’s always a great feeling knowing you’re able to reach out to your host family even after the season is over and connect with them on everything that is new. A big thank you to the Meyer’s for their hospitality and support.
